Oxford Police Department
Reserves and Auxiliary
What is the Oxford Police Reserve
Division and what do they do?
The Reserve Division of the Oxford Police Department was created primarily to
supplement the Patrol Division of the Department and offer additional manpower
for regular duty and special events. Officers in the Reserve Division are
charged with the protection of life and property within the City Limits of
Oxford and the enforcement of all federal, state and local laws and ordinances.
Reserve officers must volunteer a minimum of 8 hours per month on regular
patrol, bicycle patrol, radio communications or other assignments.
What is the set up for the Reserve Division?
A Reserve Lieutenant, Reserve Sergeant, and three Reserve Corporals oversee
officers in the reserve division. The Reserve Division is under the
direction of the Officer Paul Garner of the
Uniform Support Division.
All officers of the Reserve Division must adhere and abide by the rules and
regulations of the Oxford Police Department and the City of Oxford.
What kind of training do Reserve Officers participate in?
Reserve Officers are required to successfully complete a State-approved training
academy for Part Time Officers, as required by the Mississippi State Board of
Minimum Standards and Training. This is a 200-hour training academy with much
of the same curriculum as the residential academies for full time police
officers. Courses are usually held one or two nights per week and some
weekends, but can vary depending on the academy’s schedule.
All new officers are also required to successfully complete the Department’s field training program with a full time FTO.
What are the qualifications for Reserve Officers? How do I apply?
Any person wishing to become a Reserve Officer must:
- be at least 21 years of age
- have no prior felony convictions or misdemeanor arrests for domestic
violence
- have a high school diploma or GED
- Parties must also have a valid Mississippi Driver's License with good
history.
A person meeting these requirements may submit an application and must
successfully complete a background investigation. The background investigation
is the same as for full time police officers. Applications are accepted on a
continuous basis throughout the year, but vacancies will be filled as positions
become available.
