The DRUG PREVENTION OFFICERS use a proactive policing strategy to prevent crime and create positive public relations.  These officers concentrate mostly on the YOUTH of the community and run such programs as DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) and GREAT (Gang Resistance Education and Training).  They are also charged with enforcing the sale of alcohol and tobacco to minors, and as public relations officers, they fulfill numerous public and private speaking engagements.

Drug Prevention Officers must have at least two years of certified experience, a college degree, and the ability to work with people of all ages and cultures.

The School Resource  Officer Program involves the placement of an Oxford Police Department Patrolman  in the Oxford High School, Central Elementary, and Oxford Middle School,  in  the City of Oxford.

The School Resource  Officer teaches Law Related classes and acts as a positive reinforcement for  both staff and students.

The definition  of a School Resource Officer encompasses three major components of his job.
    1. Law Enforcement
    2. Counseling and education
    3. A proactive approach to law enforcement through positive role modeling

These three components  allow the SRO to promote positive relations between youth and law enforcement,  which promotes school safety and deters juvenile delinquency.

A particularly  innovative aspect of SRO Program is its use of veteran law enforcement officers  as instructors.  These officers, because of their "street experience",  and the respect they typically receive from children, being a credibility  to law related education that is unmatched by regular classroom teachers.

The School Resource  Officer Program is a joint effort of the Oxford Police Department and the  City of Oxford School District.  Together we focus on improving the quality  of life for our students and to strive for a safe school environment.

Please email any of the officers for your school with any comments or questions.
